Green pool tutorial
Clean a green pool. Step by step.
A green pool usually means algae has taken hold and chlorine demand is high. This guide walks through preparation, treatment, chlorine support, and clean-up.
Before you start
Get the pool ready, then follow the steps.
These guides are written for everyday pool owners. Use the steps as a practical starting point, then test your water and adjust based on your own pool size, equipment, and condition.
Step 1
Get the big mess out first.
Leaves, sludge, and organic waste consume chlorine and slow down recovery. Remove as much as possible before treatment.
If you cannot see the floor, work carefully and avoid stirring heavy debris more than necessary.
- Scoop leaves and large debris.
- Empty baskets repeatedly.
- Check that the pump is primed and moving water.
Step 2
Brush every algae-covered surface.
Green algae can cling to walls, floor, steps, ladders, and corners. Brushing breaks it up so sanitiser and Dazzle can reach more of the problem.
Do not just treat the water column if algae is stuck to surfaces.
- Brush walls and floor.
- Focus on shaded and low-flow areas.
- Repeat brushing during recovery if needed.
Step 3
Maintain enough chlorine to kill algae.
A green pool can burn through chlorine fast. Even with Dazzle, you still need enough sanitising power to deal with the biological load.
For severe green pools, one shock dose may not be enough. Test and maintain chlorine through the clean-up process.
- Test free chlorine regularly.
- Re-dose chlorine if it drops quickly.
- Check CYA if chlorine seems ineffective.
Step 4
Use Dazzle to support the pool reset.
Dazzle helps tackle algae pressure, phosphate load, clarity issues, and fine particles. It gives the pool a better path back to clear water when used as part of a full process.
Dose according to pool volume and label directions.
- Keep water circulating.
- Allow treatment time to work.
- Watch for particles settling as the pool clears.
Step 5
Remove what settles out.
Dead algae and bound particles often settle to the floor. Vacuuming removes that load from the pool instead of letting it recirculate.
Clean or backwash the filter after clean-up because it may collect a lot of fine material.
- Vacuum slowly.
- Vacuum to waste if appropriate.
- Retest and balance when the pool is clear.
Pro tips
Small checks that make a big difference.
Keep chlorine present
Green pools can consume chlorine quickly. Test and maintain sanitising power until the pool holds chlorine.
High CYA can slow you down
If stabiliser is too high, chlorine may struggle. This can make algae recovery frustrating.
Filter longer
After treatment, filtration may need extra time to polish the water.
Ready for the next step?
Dazzle your pool with a clear plan.
Use the guide, dose correctly, keep the water moving, and finish with clean-up, testing, and balance. When you are ready, choose Dazzle and follow the how-to-use guide for best results.
